Carved bamboo brushpot, China, 1st half of the 18th century. Qing dynasty reticulated bamboo brushpot of pierced work, the design showing a scholar leaning against a gnarled pine tree. His left arm is bent at the elbow and in his other hand he holds a shoe. The reverse is decorated with a tree issuing from tiered rocks with vegetation, and a flying stork amid swirling clouds.
