Konwa stoneware jar with peonies against in-filled black ground, Liao dynasty, China, 11th-early 12th century. A large jar of plain globular shape with a thick rolled rim, decorated with a broad band of flowers in white with combed details. The background of the band carved away and in-filled with black glaze. The rest of the jar has a yellowish white glaze. The base has a broad bi-type foot unglazed without a footrim showing the body of putty coloured clay. This type of Konwa ware, is also sometimes known as Chifeng ware.
