Cizhou stoneware pillow, Northern Song dynasty, China, 11th century. A Cizhou pillow of oblong shape. The top is decorated with a long, beehive-shaped flower against a close, small ring-punched 'fish-roe' ground surrounded by a band of incised classic scroll. The sides are decorated with incised stars and circles alternating in vertical rows in panels. The decoration is carved through the white slip to a brown underslip.
