Ding type bowl with moulded decoration of boys, flowers and precious emblems, Liao dynasty, China, 1st half of 11th century. A moulded bowl with a white glaze of Ding type, the exterior plain with typical Ding teardrops. The interior has a spirally carved flower in the centre, the cavetto has precious emblems such as coral and rhino horn, four small boys with ribbons and moths amid floral sprays of probably peonies and daisies. The glazed rim has a narrow band of cloud scrolls. The cloud scrolls round the rim and the moths are typical Liao motifs and the glazing of the rims and no spur marks are indicative of the bowl being fired individually in a sagger.
