A view across the Trent & Mersey Canal looking towards the Etruria Gas Works with the mill premises of George Cookson and Company Limited in the right foreground. The gas works opened in 1904. In the years after the Second World War gas began to replace coal within the pottery industry, a trend that accelerated following the demise of coal-fired bottle kilns following the introduction of the Clean Air Act in 1956.
