Severn Bridge, Gloucestershire, 2011. General view of the suspension bridge carrying the M48 motorway, built in the 1960s. The bridge is picked out by warm sunlight, while in the foreground ancient wooden piles are silhouetted against the tidal mudflats. Now referred to as the old Severn Bridge, the first Severn crossing was constructed between 1961 and 1966 by Freeman Fox and Partners and designed by Sir Percy Thomas. The bridge spans 5,754ft from shore to shore, and was the longest suspension bridge in England when constructed.
