'The Coming Race', 1872. This cartoon shows one of the new female doctors asking for assistance from a manly and upright male surgeon. Punch disapproved generally of women moving into traditional male professions. However, this cartoon shows in the background just the type of Out-Patient board that might be seen today. It also illustrates the widespread use of chloroform in surgery. From Punch, or the London Charivari, September 14, 1872.
