Légende

'Physic for Fenians', 1866. Erin, wearing shamrocks in her hair, has brought her little Fenian in to be examined by Dr Bull. Looking sternly at the mutinous boy, Dr Bull says that he treated a similar case in India. This refers to the Indian Uprising of 1857. He proposes to deal with the Fenian problem in exactly the same way. The Irish Fenian movement had begun to make its presence felt during the previous year. As the American Civil War came to a conclusion, money began to arrive from the United States to support the Fenians. Their aims were the separation of Ireland from Britain and the overthrow of the Queen's authority. From Punch, or the London Charivari, December 8, 1866.
