'The Double Janus Guard, for Clapham Junction', 1865. A 'Double Janus', with four faces, stands guard at the new Clapham Junction, a complex arrangement of railway lines. All four faces will be needed if the trains are to be safely guided onto the right tracks. Janus in Roman mythology was the god of passageways and doorways.
