'One Good Turn Deserves Another', 1862. Old Abe says: Why I Du Declare It's My Dear Old Friend Sambo! Course You'll Fight For Us, Sambo. Lend Us A Hand, Old Hoss, Du! In June 1862 the United States Senate decreed the abolition of slavery in all territories of the Union. Here, President Abraham Lincoln is portrayed offering all the accoutrements of war to a black American in the hope that gratitude would drive former slaves to fight for the Northern states. This particular slave looks less than enthusiastic. Later, in September 1862, Lincoln announced his intention to recommend to Congress that all slaves in the US should be emancipated, such decree to be effective from 1st January 1863. Compensation would be made for the loss of slave property to all former owners who had remained loyal to the Union. From Punch, or the London Charivari, August 9, 1862.
