West Indian arrivals living in a shelter underneath Clapham South Tube station, London, 1950s. In 1948, the 'Empire Windrush' arrived at the Port of Tilbury, near London, carrying Caribbean migrants to Britain. Many were housed temporarily in underground passages which had been fitted with bunk beds and washing facilities when they were used as civilian shelters during World War II. Accommodation and meals cost 6s.6d. (33p) a day. Most of the passengers from Jamaica had £5 to last them until they found work.
