The first window-smashers, Mary Leigh and Edith New in the dock at Bow Street Magistrates, 1908. Frustrated and angered by the way members of the WSPU were being treated by the police during a demonstration in Parliament Square on 30th June, they broke windows at No10 Downing Street. Twenty-seven suffragettes were charged with obstruction and went to Holloway Gaol, where Leigh and New joined them.
