Légende

'Orange Court-Drury Lane', 1872. A narrow alleyway with lines of washing hanging between the buildings. A woman walks by hunched over a walking stick, a girl looks after a baby, women sit against the wall nursing children. A knife grinder works at a knife sharpener on the left. Taken from London: A Pilgrimage by Blanchard Jerrold and Gustave Doré. A Pilgrimage was a comprehensive portrait of London, but although the book was a commercial success many of the critics disliked it. Several were upset that Jerrold and Doré had concentrated on the poverty that existed in London.
