'The Right Dishonourable Double-face Asquith', c1910. Poster produced by the Women's Social and Political Union, urging support for the cause of votes for women. Asquith, the prime minister, is shown with two personalities. As 'Citizen Asquith' the French revolutionary, he faces the king, waving the flag of Liberty, Equality, Fraternity, and saying Down with privilege of birth - up with democratic rule! With his other face he tells the suffragette in prison uniform that The rights of Government belong to the aristocrats by birth - men. No liberty or equality for women! Emmeline Pankhurst and Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence were leading figures in the suffrage movement.
