Légende

Sculpture of four mother-goddesses, Roman. Two hold fruit, one has a dog in her lap, and a fourth nurses a baby. Religion in Britain at this period was a mixture of native Celtic and imported ideas, and the three Celtic mother-goddesses were commonly depicted in Roman religious sculpture. It is not clear why the fourth figure with the baby has been added here - she may not only represent Dea Nutrix, a nursing mother-goddess, but also a deified empress.
