Courtyard guns at Calshot Castle, Hampshire, 1995. This view shows how cannon within the courtyard would command Southampton Water. Calshot Castle was built in 1539-40 as an artillery fort to guard the entrance to Southampton Water. The curtain wall was lowered in the 1770s and the heads of the embrazures removed.
