Una leggenda ripresa dal Romanzo di Alessandro dello Pseudo-Callistene narra che Alessandro, per potersi levare in volo, attaccò al proprio cocchio due grifoni; poi infilzò su due lance grossi pezzi di carne in modo tale che, tenendole in alto, i grifoni fossero costretti, nella brama di afferrare la carne, a librarsi in volo trascinando così il cocchio verso l'alto.
Il soggetto era tradizionalmente ritenuto “Berta che filava”.
