"Modello del monumento a Vittorio Alfieri", 1806, di Antonio Canova (1757 - 1822), gesso. Sopra un alto basamento ovale, sormontato da un ulteriore gradone, decorato da festoni e da un'epigrafe dedicatoria, si erge il sarcofago che porta scolpito sul frontone il ritratto in profilo del poeta entro un medaglione con la scritta «VICTORIVS ALFERIVS ASTENSIS». La figura dolente è allegoria dell’Italia e piange la perdita di uno dei suoi più stimati figli, nell’atteggiamento composto e solenne di un’antica matrona.

Above a high oval base, surmounted by a further staircase, decorated with festoons and a dedicatory epigraph, there is the sarcophagus which is decorated the profile portrait of the poet carved on the pediment within a medallion with the inscription "VICTORIVS ALFERIVS ASTENSIS". The mourning figure is an allegory of Italy and mourns the loss of one of his most esteemed children, in the composed and solemn attitude of an ancient matron.
