Orvieto, Basilica Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta (o Duomo): la facciata, iniziata alla fine del XIII secolo.
Particolare del rivestimento dei quattro pilastri delle porte. Si tratta di lastree marmoree con bassorilievi eseguite tra il 1320 e il 1330 da Lorenzo Maitani con l'aiuto di maestranze senesi e pisane.
Soggetto:seguito delle scene bibliche con le profezie messianiche. Tra i girali di acanto si sviluppano i seguenti temi: Adamo o Abramo dormiente; Re David, Re Salomone, Roboamo, Abia, Asa, Giosafat; Maria e Cristo. Ai lati i profeti con le loro tabelle. Le scene rappresentano: Balaam; la vocazione di Giosuè; il Miracolo di Gedeone; Davide unto re; Presentazione di Samuele a Elia; I fanciulli di Israele in Egitto; il pane e il vino preparati da Melchisedech ad Abramo; Crocifissione.

Subject: continuation of biblical scenes with Messianic prophecies. The following themes develop between the acanthus spirals: Adam or Abraham asleep; King David, King Solomon, Roboamo, Abia, Asa, Giosafat; Mary and Christ. On the sides the prophets with their tables. The scenes represent: Balaam; the vocation of Joshua; the Miracle of Gideon; David anointed king; Presentation of Samuel to Elijah; The children of Israel in Egypt; the bread and wine prepared by Melchisedech for Abraham; Crucifixion.
