Orvieto, Basilica Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta (o Duomo), interno: La Pietà (o Deposizione), gruppo marmoreo realizzato nella seconda metà del XVI secolo dall’architetto e scultore orvietano Ippolito Scalza. La Pietà, scolpita da un unico blocco di marmo, si compone di quattro figure: il Cristo, esamine, adagiato sul grembo della Vergine Maria, Nicodemo con il volto chino verso la figura di Gesù, mentre con una mano regge la scala e il martello e nell’altra stringe le pinze (elementi che richiamano la Crocifissione), e infine, la Maddalena inginocchiata con il volto poggiato sulla mano di Cristo.
[ENG] Orvieto, Basilica Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (or Duomo), the interior: The Lamentation (or Deposition), a marble group created in the second half of the 16th century by the Orvieto architect and sculptor Ippolito Scalza. The Pietà, carved from a single block of marble, is composed of four figures: Christ, lying on the lap of the Virgin Mary, Nicodemus with his face bent towards the figure of Jesus, while with one hand he holds the ladder and the hammer and in the other he holds the pincers (elements that recall the Crucifixion), and finally, the kneeling Magdalene with the face resting on the hand of Christ.
