(dpa files) - A photo taken secretly by a German soldier during a visit shows the original Amber Room which was exhibited between 1941 and 1944 at the castle in Kaliningrad, photographed around 1942/43. His pictures are today the only surviving colour photos of the famous amber room. - The Amber Room was a present from Prussia to Russia, offered by the king of Prussia to Russian Czar Peter the Great in 1716. Catherine the Great later moved it from the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg to her new summer abode in Tsarskoye Selo in 1770. When Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, the German troops shipped the amber room to Koenigsberg, Germany (today Kaliningrad). The room was eventually lost in the chaos of World War II. The former Soviet Union began the reconstruction of a replica of the room in 1979. The finishing stage of the project was financed by the German Ruhrgas AG with 3 million Euro.
