Commander of the German border police special unit GSG 9, Colonel Ulrich Wegener, is welcomed by chancellor Helmut Schmidt (l) in Bonn during the awarding ceremony of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany on the20th of October in 1977. In the background the soldiers of the unit, who were involved in liberating the hostages. The Lufthansa aircraft "Landshut" with more than 80 travellers on board, was hijacked on the 13th of October in 1977 during the flight back from Mallorca to Germany. After an odyssee via Rome, Cyprus, Dubai and Aden the hostages were liberated by the German elite unit GSG-9 in Mogadishu/Somalia.
