Oberhausen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, renaturalisation of the Emscher in the Holtener Bruch. A new floodplain landscape for flood protection and biodiversity is being created here. The Emscher, which is currently straightened, is being given curves again and can meander through its new floodplain. The ecological reorganisation of the Emscher system consists of the construction of a central wastewater treatment system in the Ruhr area, the construction of sewers and the renaturation of the Emscher and its tributaries. Following the construction of a parallel sewer, the Emscher has been completely free of sewage since January 2022.
