Friedrich Nietzsche photographed by Friedrich Hermann Hartmann ca. 1875, Switzerland Friedrich Nietzsche (15 October 1844 - 25 August 1900) was an important German philosopher and philologist of the 19th century. When he moved to Switzerland in 1879, he became stateless at his own request and remained in this status until the end of his life. He is regarded as one of the pioneers and masterminds of modern philosophy. In his works, he sharply criticised morality, religion, science and art. He also rejected anti-Semitic ideas that were widespread at the time. He was little recognised and read during his lifetime. His best-known works and ideas include: Thus Spoke Zarathustra', 'The Birth of Tragedy from the Spirit of Music
