The Birth of Venus, also known as Victorious Venus, depicts the Roman goddess Venus standing naked on a flight of steps, surrounded by white doves symbolising peace and love. In her left hand she holds the golden apple, representing her victory in the Judgement of Paris, a work by Alexandre Cabanel (born 28 September 1823 in Montpellier, died 23 January 1889 in Paris), a French academic history painter.
