Portrait of Max Planck by Hugo Erfuhrt, 1938, Germany Max Planck (*23. 04. 1858, Kiel - 4. 10. 1947, Göttingen) was a German theoretical physicist and founder of quantum physics. This makes him one of the most important physicists of the 19th and 20th centuries. Planck's law of radiation, for example, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918, is named after him. During the National Socialist era, Max Planck initially co-operated with the new rulers as President of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society, but increasingly came into conflict with them as he allowed Jewish scientists to continue working for a limited period of time. He and other researchers such as Werner Heisenberg were labelled 'white Jews'. As a result, Max Planck gradually withdrew from various offices. However, he was not persecuted or arrested. His son Erwin Planck was arrested on 23 July 1944 and convicted of involvement in the assassination attempt of 20 July 1944 and executed in January 1945
