Alexander Fleming, British bacteriologist and physician. Portrait around 1940. Together with Ernst Boris Chain and Howard Flore, he received the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1945 for the discovery of the antibiotic penicillin. He also discovered lysozyme, an enzyme that has powerful antibacterial properties and is found in various body secretions such as tears and saliva. On September 28, 1928, in the laboratory, he noticed how molds of the genus Penicillium, which had accidentally fallen into a staphylococcal culture, inhibited the growth of bacteria. The discovery of penicillin was a medical revolution that suddenly made it possible to cure countless diseases caused by bacteria. Historical, contemporary history
