The Great Wall of China stretches across northern China, from Liaoning Province in the east to Gansu Province in the west. Construction began in the 7th century BC with various regional walls, but the most famous sections were built during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644). The Wall served as a military defense system against invasions, controlled trade along the Silk Road, and symbolized the strength and unification of imperial China
