In the middle the university lecturer Ernst Häckel, 1876 Ernst Häckel, in full Ernst Heinrich Philipp August Häckel (16 February 1834 - 9 August 1919), was an important German zoologist, philosopher and artist. He taught as a university lecturer in Jena. He supported Charles Darwin's theory of evolution and popularised it in Germany. He coined several terms that are important today. These include phylogeny, ontogenesis and the term ecology. He used his great talent as a draughtsman to make the beauty of nature known to a wide audience.
