He was a member of the Democratic Party. His presidency during the 'Cold War' was characterised by many crises: Construction of the Berlin Wall, Cuban Missile Crisis, escalation of the Vietnam War, African-American civil rights movement. He campaigned for the abolition of racial segregation in the southern states and pursued a policy of détente.
