A photo of Walter Gropius' original memorial to the victims of the Kapp Putsch carried out by right-wing extremists on March 15, 1920 in the old cemetery in Weimar. In reference to 1848, these victims were also referred to as fallen in March. When the National Socialists came to power in 1936, the monument was blown up. It was reconstructed in 1946. Walter Gropius was an important German architect and the founder of the legendary Bauhaus in Weimar. He took on American citizenship in 1944. He had to emigrate in 1934 because his revolutionary past at the end of the First World War, as well as his ideas and commitment, threatened persecution by the National Socialists.
