Elisha Mitchell (1793-1857) American naturalist and explorer. Professor of chemistry, mineralogy and geology at the University of North Carolina. In 1835 he determined the height of Mount Mitchell in North Carolina. While checking his earlier measurements, he fell to his death at the nearby Mitchell Falls.
