Wernher von Braun, weapons technology, weapons systems, rocket technology, cruise missiles, Nordhausen 11 April 1945, Second World War, Germany Dead workers (prisoners) lie in irregular rows on the floor of barracks, found by the American 3rd Armoured Division, FUSA, when they captured the German forced labour camp in Nordhausen. The establishment of the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp was preceded by the development of the A4 rocket. Designed as a weapon of terror, it became known under the propaganda name V2 (Vergeltungswaffe 2) . The rocket was produced at the Peenemünde military testing centre on the island of Usedom. Series production began in the early summer of 1943. However, a heavy air raid by the Royal Air Force on the night of 18 August 1943 put a swift end to Peenemünde V2 production. The air raid on Peenemünde forced the decision to relocate production to regions less exposed to the air. The choice fell on a tunnel system of the Economic Research Organisation
