The Reichstag after Allied bombing, end of April 1945 Berlin, Germany Immediately after the end of the Second World War, the last heavily contested Reichstag building stood as a partial ruin in an area marked by rubble. The open spaces around were used by the starving population as plots for growing potatoes and vegetables. On November 22, 1954, the dome was blown up — due to alleged static uncertainty and to relieve the load on the damaged building
