After the fall of the Bastille in 1789, Foulon De Doue, Controller General of Finance under Louis XV, fled to Viry-Châtillon, a few miles south of the capital. He was soon captured by the peasants and had to walk barefoot with a bundle of hay on his back. The sweat from his face was wiped off with nettles, digital reproduction of a historical model
