Instruments of torture: The spider. The Spanish spider looks and moves like a hair clip. Except that the tips were made of iron and were not pushed into the hair but under the skin, usually on sensitive areas such as the neck or inner thighs. Then you could attach a rope to the Spanish spider and pull the defendant up with a pulley, woodcut from 1864
