The duelists each appointed seconds whose task it was to witness the duel and check that the usual rules were observed. Here two men standing ready with their pistols. Starting back to back, they turn around walk a certain number of steps in opposite directions. At the last step they turn around and whoever is fastest and aims best wins the duel.
