The partial uncovering of the early work in the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum has been completed In the south stairwell foyer of the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum, the large-format mural Lebensfreude (Joy of Life) was created in 1956, with which the then 24-year-old Gerhard Richter completed his studies at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. This diploma work, measuring around 63 square metres, was painted over in 1979 and then largely forgotten. After two smaller windows had already been opened in the 1990s, a central section of this historically significant work of art has been uncovered since February 2024 with Gerhard Richter's consent. The result of this complex restoration project can now be viewed. The uncovering was a joint project of the Deutsches Hygiene Museum and the Wüstenrot Foundation in co-operation with the Dresden University of Fine Arts.
