Pan chases Syrinx. Engraving depicting Jason and the Argonauts. Engraved illustration from 'The Temple of the Muses', 1733. This book represented remarkable events of antiquity drawn and engraved by Bernard Picart (1673-1733). In classical mythology, Syrinx was a nymph. Pursued by the amorous Greek god Pan, she ran to a river's edge and asked for assistance from the river nymphs. she was transformed into hollow water reeds. Pan cut the reeds to fashion the first set of pan pipes, which were thenceforth known as syrinx. The word syringe was derived from this word.
