Captain (William) KIDD - (c1645-1701) Scottish privateer and merchant. In 1695 given command of expedition against pirates in the Indian Ocean. Accused of turning pirate himself. Sailed to Boston and surrendered when promised a pardon. However, sent to London, tried and hanged for piracy. Here he is being questioned by the House of Commons. 19th century reconstruction
