Although many Melanau are now Muslim / some still consult spirit experts when they fall ill. The expert identifies the spirit causing the symptoms and makes a wooden or plaited palm-leaf image of it. A respected person is chosen to call the spirit away from the sick person's soul and into the image / which is then returned to the spirit's usual home in the forest / river or sea.
