Gustav III (1746-92) King of Sweden from 1671. Assassinated during a masked ball. Verdi's 1859 opera "Un ballo in maschera" originally romanticised version of episode, but censorship would now allow assassination of a king, so plot was transferred to 17th century Boston, Mass. Copperplate engraving
