Caption
Museum of Ancient Egyptian Art, Luxor, Egypt.
Sandstone head of the pharaoh Akhenaton in the typically Amarna style, natural and not stylised. In 1349 BC Akhenaton rejected the god Amun and moved his capital from Thebes to el-Armana. It was a joyful liberation for his followers and this period produced Egypt's most radical art and some of its most enlightened thinking. He died 1336 BC.
