Economy in fuel led to the adoption of the hay box, aka straw box, fireless cooker, insulation cooker, wonder oven or retained-heat cookers being used during World War I. These cookers utilized the heat of the food being cooked to complete the cooking process. Food items to be cooked were heated to boiling point, and then insulated.From The Pageant of the Century, published 1934.
