Robert Fulton, 1765 - 1815. American engineer and inventor, widely credited with developing a commercially successful steamboat called The North River Steamboat of Claremont. He was also commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1800 to attempt to design the Nautilus, which was the first practical submarine in history. From Les Merveilles de la Science, published 1870.
