After two days' preparation, the main Federal assault took place in the early morning of June 3rd against a well-entrenched Confederate army. Federal losses were overwhelming, and by noon Gen. Grant called a halt to the entire attack; map depicts the area of Hanover County, Va., that includes Old and New Cold Harbor, Gaines Mill, and Bethesda Church in relation to the Chickahominy and Totopotomoy rivers.
