View of the 'Temple of the Sun' at Palenque, The temple was in fact a shrine and was built to commemorate the accession to the throne of Chan-Bahlum, son of Pacal. The shrine was decorated internally with scenes from Maya mythology, such as the setting sun, the jaguar god, warfare and sacrifice. Mexico. Classic Maya. 690 AD. Palenque.
