Chest, Beginning in about 1820 argillite was used by the Haida to carve curios for sale. By about 1880 they introduced concepts that were taboo in traditional art. On this chest lid is raven, with both human and birdlike attributes. Raven, the trickster and cultural hero, discovers mankind in a cockle shell. Northwest Coast of America. Haida, late 19th c Carved by Charles Edenshaw, the most famous of the Haida carvers.
