Execution of a slave, Algeria. A line engraving depicts a European slave suffering crucifixion by hanging, a typical Algerian execution used to punish slaves who had tried to escape. Up until the 19th century, raids by Barbary pirates on the coastal towns and ships of the Mediterranean resulted in the capture of many European slaves who were later sold at markets in northern Africa. Algeria, circa 1778. Algeria, Northern Africa, Africa.
