Policing the riots in Calcutta, 1946. Indian police form a barricade with lathis (bamboo sticks) to control crowds of Indian protesters on Old Court House Street. The photographer refers to the event as a "Communist demo", but it could be any one of a number of uprisings that plagued Calcutta in 1946. Two occasions that seem to fit are an attempt by student demonstrators to enter Dalhousie Square on 11 February, or the August riots relating to Direct Action Day. Calcutta (Kolkata), India, 1946.
